Good Eats in NYC

After one full day of driving and an amazing afternoon at the Dia: Beacon, Shoji and I made our way to New York City for a day and a half to visit my sister, stuff our faces and tour the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Here’s a glimpse of our NYC food voyage:

1. Sunday Brunch at The Smith Restaurant in the East Village.  This place serves up a bit of everything…there are even some options for the gluten-free diner.  What the Smith Restaurant delivered was the best mac-n-cheese I’ve ever sunk my teeth into.  It arrived at the table in a cast iron skillet hot from the oven still bubbling with goodness.  Yummy!

2. Dinner at Ouest in the Upper West Side.  Divine dining courtesy of our friend Jim Turnbull.  We started off with a lovely, airy Truffled Omelet Souffle with Sauce Mousseline.  Our entre’s varied from Eden Brook Trout to Bacon-Wrapped Meatloaf and Grilled free-range chicken.  The grand finale was the dessert course…I devoured a dense lava-like chocolate cake topped with a perfect dollop of vanilla bean ice cream and five polka-dots of fudge decorating the plate.  Unbelievable meal from beginning to end.

3. Quick Breakfast of oatmeal, yogurt and a ham-n-cheese croissant at a grab-n-go.  Nothing to brag about here.

4. Lunch at The Sea Grill in Rockefeller Center.  Wow…what a meal!  Dining area is level to the ice rink visible from behind a wall of windows.  We splurged with this one, but it was worth every penny.  I was craving fish the entire trip and this place was a perfect choice for seafood options.  Shoji ordered the “Express-Lunch” which included one of their famous baked crab cakes and a bowl of their rich and savory seafood chowder.  I chose a filet of Casco Bay Cod grilled to perfection atop a bed of wilted spinach.  As a real treat, we tried their “portabella fries” which were tempura battered portabella “slices” served with a ponzu dipping sauce…these went down way too easy!

5. Snack of slices at Uncle Paul’s Pizza in Midtown East.  We weren’t hungry, but felt the need to indulge in a slice of New York pizza.  Located right outside Grand Central Station and open 24hrs., you can get a simple slice of cheese or pepperoni pizza or turn things up a notch with one of their gourmet options (pizza topped with duck confit or a stuffed pita with fois gras and figs).  Good, quick bite with plenty of seating.

6. Last stops before hitting the road back home: a box of macaroons to go from  Bouchon Bakery and a 6 pack of cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery.
